During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, Lin Shih lives in a small island village with her husband, a brutal butcher who treats her as a sexual victim. Almost every night, he forces her to have sex with him before she is allowed to eat. This reminds Lin Shih of how her mother was raped by a Japanese soldier and subsequently committed suicide. The gossipy and superstitious villagers take Lin Shih's moaning during sexual intercourse as cries of joy.
